Bill enlisted in the United States Air Force in October of 1983. He attended Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base, TX in July 1984 and then Security Police training again at Lackland AFB. His first duty station was Malmstrom Air Force Base MT arriving in November 1984. In March of 1989 he was sent to RAF Upper Heyford AFB in England. While there he was sent on his first deployment to Sirsenk in northern Iraq in 1991. He returned to Malmstrom AFB in 1993 and retrained into Personnel Management. In 1997 he was assigned to the 819th RED HORSE Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base. While there he was deployed his second time to Al Udeid Qatar in 2001. In 2003 He was sent to Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks AK. While there he was deployed to Bagdad International Airport in Bagdad Iraq in 2004. In September 2005 Bill retired from the Air Force after 21 years at the rank of MSgt (E7).

Bill joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 2016 after an extensive search for an organization where he could once again connect with fellow veterans and continue his commitment to service. As a member of VFW Post 1087 in Great Falls, Montana, he has served as Junior Vice Commander (2018–2019), Senior Vice Commander (2019–2021), and Post Commander (2021–2025). At the District level, he served in both Junior and Senior Vice Commander positions for District 2 from 2019–2025. His Department-level service includes Department Chaplain (2024–2025), Department Junior Vice Commander (2025–2026), and Department Senior Vice Commander (2026–2027).

Bill is a Gold Legacy Life Member of the VFW and a Life Member of the VFW National Home. His leadership has also earned recognition as an All-American Post Commander (2021–2025) and All-State Post Commander (2023–2025).

Bill currently lives in Great Falls MT with his wife Becky. They have four kids and seven grandkids. Their two sons are currently serving in the USAF and the USN. Bill works for the Montana Air National Guard in the Human Resources department.
