Ron Merwin
State Commander - Navy

Ron Merwin was elected State Commander of the Department of Montana, of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. on June 19, 2021, at the State Convention in Lewistown, Montana. He was born and raised in Jordan, Montana, and enlisted in the US Navy upon graduation from High School in 1960. 

His naval assignments included NTC San Diego Recruit Boot Camp and IC A school. New London Ct enlisted sub school then San Diego USS Ronquil SS 396. Qualified in January 1962. Nuclear Power School in Vallejo and Prototype at A1W Idaho Falls. New Construction Newport News USS John C Calhoun SSBN 630G. Staff at A1W qualified as EOOW. NESEP at Univ of Idaho. Commissioned May 1971. Officer Sub School: USS Robert E Lee SSBN 601B, USS Casimir Pulaski SSBN 633G, USS Bonefish SS 582, COMSUBPAC, USS Kamehameha SSBN 642B.

Ron retired as a LCDR in 1981. He is a life member of USSVI Montana Base and past commander. In addition, he is a life member MOAA, member of the American Legion, and Gold Legacy Life Member of the VFW.  He serves as a member of the Ronan/Polson Honor Guard, and he has held numerous positions with these veteran organizations.

He is a three-time All American Commander for Post 5652 between 2016-2019, and served as Junior Vice Commander and Senior Vice Commander between 2019-2021.

He has been married to Jessie (Boughton) for 60 years.  Together they have 3 sons, 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also a member of the Terrace Lake Community Church and past Elder and Treasurer.
